Virtue of the mOnth
Each month one student from each homeroom is chosen to receive this award.
Crayons/Colors/Collaboration
September – Our color and virtue for the month of September is BLACK. Black represents PRUDENCE. If you are a prudent person, you are someone who is wise, someone who shows good and careful judgment, someone who takes their time making decisions. St. Dymphna asked for and followed the advice of her spiritual director and guide. We ask her to help us know what is right and also for the strength to do it.
October – Our color and virtue for the month of October is BLUE. Blue represents HONESTY and FIDELITY. If you are an honest and faithful person, you are someone who has integrity and high moral character – you know the difference between right and wrong – you are loyal to your faith, family, and friends. St. Augustine is a wonderful example of honesty and fidelity. He knew that he made many mistakes in his life and he was honest in admitting them. He was also faithful to asking God to lead and guide him.
November – Our color and virtue for the month of November is GREEN. Green represents COURAGE. If you are a courageous person, you are someone who is brave, bold and gritty. You will do what is right even when it might be very hard to do. St. Maximilian Kolbe was brave, courageous and bold when he saved a man’s life in the German Concentration Camps. Instead of the other man dying, St. Maximilian took his place and gave up his own life.
December – Our color and virtue for the month of December is PURPLE/VIOLET. Purple represents TEMPERANCE OR DELIBERATENESS. If you are a temperate person, you are someone who is mild, calm, and gentle. You are also aware of other people and their feelings. St. John Vianney’s main mission was to lead others to Jesus – he was aware that people needed help in learning who Jesus was and how to get to know him better.
January – Our color and virtue for the month of January is RED. Red represents CHARITY and COMPASSION. If you are a charitable and compassionate person you are willing to share with others as well as be a good listener and friend. St. “Mother” Terese of Calcutta’s main focus was to help others, especially those who were sick and dying.
February – Our color and virtue for the month of February is ORANGE. Orange represents DEPENDABILITY. If you are a dependable person then people can count on you – they know you will do what you say and say what you do. St. Padre Pio was sick for most of his life but people knew they could depend upon him to pray for them and to bring them closer to Jesus.
March – Our color and virtue for the month of March is YELLOW. Yellow represents sunshine, hope, and happiness. If you are a person of HOPE, you are a person of trust. You trust in the goodness of God and others. St. Therese of Lisieux, like St. Padre Pio from last month, was also a saint who was sick most of her life. Yet, even with her sickness, she remained hopeful and knew that God was with her. The last words she spoke were, “My God, I love you.”
April – Our color and virtue for the month of April is BROWN. Brown represents HEALING. If you are a person who helps to heal others, you can give and receive forgiveness. St. Martin de Porres found a place in Lima, Peru for abandoned and orphaned children. He wanted the children to come and be healed – to be taken care of and loved.
May – Our color and virtue for the month of May is TURQUOISE. Turquoise represents CREATIVITY. If you are a person who is creative, you are able to see things differently, come up with original ideas, and share different points of view in a respectful way. Hildegard von Bingen is a great example of a person sharing her creative gifts. She was a writer, composer of music, artist, pharmacist, and a woman who advised the Pope.
